Marketing ROI is based mostly on the Client Goals. Some just want to know how much they paid for adds, versus how the amount of sales.

We always recommend specific goals for a landing page, ad campaign, etc. and track that over a given period of time.

Conversion tracking with Keap CRM is common in my area. But we also use tools like Marketplan.io to track across multiple stages of a funnel.

Google Analytics, Segmetrics, or Databox will also provide insights depending on the goal of the client.

That makes sense to me. Are your clients coming to you with very firm goals, or are they open to your feedback if their goals are dramatically different than what you think can be achieved based on your experience? Or do some of them maybe even ask you what realistic goals might look like?

Also, your review of Keap is one of the most informative reviews I've ever seen!

Hi Brett,

I'm not from a Marketing background, but before I entered IT I was an Account Manager (Sales person) with BT (the UK's equivalent of AT&T) back in the early 90's. Now, we could measure and record Sales success through a range of criteria, but I've always wondered how they do that in Marketing.

So, like yourself, I am fascinated as to what metrics are used to objectively measure success in Marketing.

And now, we get our (heavily buttered) popcorn ready, and wait for the marketing pro's to chime in 🍿

For me, it’s not just about hitting numbers or ROI; it’s about the story behind the results. Did we truly resonate with our audience? Did we shift perceptions, spark conversations, or make someone’s life easier? That’s where I find the real magic.

When it comes to tools, I’ve leaned heavily on platforms like Salesforce to connect the dots between effort and outcome. But the numbers only tell part of the story. I also value direct feedback—hearing from the internal team, customers, or even community members who’ve felt the impact of a campaign. It’s those moments when someone says, “That really spoke to me,” that you know the strategy was more than just effective; it was meaningful.

Of course, ROI is the big one for most stakeholders. I’ve learned that clear, measurable goals upfront make all the difference. Whether it’s lead gen, conversions, or just driving awareness, having that clarity keeps everyone aligned. And while metrics are important, I try to remind myself that marketing success is also about the relationships we build and the trust we foster along the way.

I think you are in the ideal situation –– You're given the opportunity to focus on a combination of ROI and "the feels". It's a tough way to live when you're told all that matters is one or the other.

For my role and company it is about how many leads we end up converting into real customers and eventually we also look at how many we were able to successfully close on as well.

This one's right in my wheelhouse :)

In my role in onboarding at an ad-tech company, I measure success in a few different ways but typically it's a mix of this:

Our platform users ROAS (Return On Ad Spend) & MER (Marketing Efficiency Ratio)- are they meeting their goals

Platform user feedback- Are they happy with the platform features and overall experience

Platform user education- Do they understand their data, following best practices, know how to navigate Meta's back end & have a better understanding of digital marketing

Hello MaryAnn,

I missed your response at the time. I've read it now and am grateful for you highlighting this. I've now got an improved understanding of Marketing departments use of these metrics (ROAS & MER).

Ironically, my ROI with this question was, "did I properly land in MaryAnn's wheelhouse".

ROI = Achieved! Time to kick my feet up for the rest of December :)

Here's a follow-up for you: how does the MER data point work? What is the efficiency that you're tracking?

Excellent ROI for this question and the follow up lol

MER measures overall marketing and gives a more holistic at look at how the entire marketing budget drives revenue vs. ROAS which measures paid advertising.

Basically MER looks at aggregate data and ROAS is granular data.
