Whistleblowing is still considered a crime in many countries, and whistleblowers can face many repercussions for speaking up about anything they might deem illegal, immoral, or fraudulent. In the past few years, there has been an increase in public and private whistleblowing. Many countries now see whistleblowing as an opportunity to guarantee ethics in organisations and governments. These countries have started to put laws in place to protect whistleblowers. Countries with dedicated national laws protecting whistleblowers include Australia, EU countries, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, the UK and the USA. Other countries that have some provisions to protect whistleblowers include Argentina, Brazil, China, Kenya, Mexico, Russia and Turkey.
