If what you're looking for is a 'Free OS' as you say, then Ubuntu is almost certainly the best option. Many other Linux distros have specific strengths - some are best for reviving old equipment, some better for server applications (CentOS and Debian). Arch Linux is the choice for people who want to dive deep into development and customisation of the linux kernel and other aspects of the OS. Kali linux is the distro for security experts -- if you're interested in security, this is the one for you.

Ubuntu's strength is as a desktop replacement. There are also some very useful flavours - Ubuntu Studio comes configured with audio/video editing software - lots of art apps, and fun stuff like guitar effects and midi sequencing. Ubuntu Mint is a light-weight streamlined desktop experience. EdUbuntu is pre-configured with educational apps.

Most people will pick one desktop-friendly distribution, and then use VirtualBox OSE to try out some of the strengths of other distros (like Kali). I think this is probably the most beneficial option for you.

Personally it is the best Linux distribution, it is easy, stable and always has stability updates and system improvements.
It is compatible with many programs.

If we speak about client PC, yes, it is definitely the best out there due to maintenance, friendly interface and versatility. On servers it is not my first choice, I normally go with Fedora based distros (CentOS/RHEL).

It is a bit difficult to compare between ubuntu and other linux distros. But in my opinion, I had found ubuntu, the best because in spite of having flexibility, it also has the user friendly environment.

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: It's not just "really good", but possibly "best", as it gains popularity in the Desktop, and IoT realms.

Hi Avinash,

The packaging system of Ubuntu is inherited from Debian and is very well structured and maintained, making it relatively seldom necessary to add external repositories to get what you want.

It is a pleasure to maintain over long periods of time (~10 years), and usually provides slightly more up-to-date software versions than Debian.

Plus there is a lot of documentation around on how to do complex things with Ubuntu.
