# Is there any way to make Illustrator load fonts at application startup?

Illustrator font book seems to be very slow at loading installed fonts, and will only load the fonts when one clicks on the Typing Tool, (which sometimes is in the middle of working on something) and thus creates a delay since the software cannot be used when loading fonts. This is only happening to the newer versions of the software and was not an issue with older versions, which means it is a solvable problem, software updates should not make the new software slow, but rather better, faster or more stable.

I haven't run across this, and haven't see reports of it being a problem. If you have a huge number of fonts on a slow hard drive, that could be part of the problem. You may be hitting memory limits. Illustrator uses a fair amount of RAM, and if it needs to swap to disk to make room for the font module and list then that would be another source of lag.

All that said, Adobe have made a number of performance improvements in Ai 2020 that just went live on Monday, so you might want to just do the update and see if that makes the problem go away.
