KeenCorp follows William A. Kahn's (1990, 1992) premise that engagement is a measure for the degree to which people express and deploy themselves in work role performances, and that this has implications for both their work effectiveness and personal experience. Our algorithm links this notion to the work of, among others, Pennebaker et al. (2003a, 2003b) that people reveal the degree to which they express and deploy themselves in language: several features of linguistic style, such as pronoun use, emotionally toned words, prepositions and conjunctions that signal cognitive work, have been linked to situational and social variations in language and a number of behavioural and emotional outcomes.

To validate the algorithm, KeenCorp has resorted to using real-life data from a real company from which the business-lifecycle is known in the market today: KeenCorp has used the publicly available Enron-corpus, which contains 320.000 e-mail messages from the e-mailboxes of Enron's 150 top-executives over a period of 2.5 years up until Enron’s bankruptcy. The resulting data show a significant decline expressed in points of the EBI index, with the lowest point following shortly after Enron's filing for bankruptcy. Moreover, the several significant dips in the index on earlier points in time can be related to significant decisions made by Enron's
management which became public during the Enron-trials.
