It is relevant. However, it will depend on your use case. For instance, application service providers/vendors will indicate which distribution of Linux their application is compatible with. For instance, Oracle may suggest their RDBMS is compatible with RedHat or Oracle Linux. Other companies may indicate support for OpenSUSE, CentOS, or other unix/bsd variants.  Personally, my use case for Slackware is infrastructure type services that do not require anything &#39;external&#39; from a large 3rd party application service provider.
