Hoping to get a read from G2 software reviewers and researchers here, especially anyone working for a mid-size team’s needs.
I keep going back and forth on whether a dedicated release orchestration platform is worth the cost for a mid-size team, or whether they would be paying for capability they won't use.
The real fork is a purpose-built tool like Octopus Deploy or CloudBees versus the release features already bundled into the platform we run, whether that is GitLab, Azure Pipelines, or GitHub. Here is the Application Release Orchestration category on G2 for context.
Both sides can do staged deployments, approvals, and rollback. The dedicated tools pull ahead when a release spans lots of interdependent services, or when you need real audit trails and separation of duties for compliance. The built-in features are usually enough when you are shipping one app or a handful of services and your platform's gates already cover you, with no separate license and nothing extra to run.
The honest deciding factor seems to be release complexity and governance, not headcount.
So for those who have evaluated these: at what point did a dedicated platform actually start paying for itself? And is there a middle path, say a GitOps setup, that splits the difference without the extra license?
