# Introducing SMS Age-Gating in Intuit Mailchimp

Mailchimp now supports age-gating for SMS programs for businesses in the alcohol industry, including breweries, wineries, and liquor stores. This feature is available on Standard, Essentials, and Premium plans with an active SMS add-on. How It Works: When age-gating is enabled, Mailchimp verifies that contacts meet the age of consent in their country based on the area code they provide. Contacts who meet the age threshold are added as subscribed SMS contacts. If a date of birth is missing or verification fails, the contact is added as non-subscribed for SMS but can still receive email marketing. Mailchimp does not store dates of birth or specific age values, only an eligible or excluded status. A Few Things to Know Before Getting Started: Age-gating can only be enabled during the initial registration of a new SMS program or for previously rejected applicants. Existing active SMS programs cannot be converted. The feature is only available on Landing Pages and Pop-up forms. Once your age-gated SMS program is approved, the age gate cannot be disabled. To import existing SMS contacts, your CSV or XLSX file must include a date of birth column matched to the Age-gate field during the import process.
