Screen monitoring software is a software that keeps running in the background of the operating system to observe what is being put up on the screen. Such software is usually used to track movement of workers or employees on their computers. Sometimes screen monitoring is synonymously used with activity monitoring of computer workers. A slight difference between screen and activity monitoring is that a screen monitoring software uses screen as a point of reference for what is being done on the computer. Such software also takes regular screenshots of the monitor to store data about what was being done on the screen at a given point. On the other hand, activity monitoring software monitors activities on the computer viz. processes / programs etc. It can be configured to track running of specific programs. A combination of these two can also be used as a productivity monitoring and enhancement tool. Its important to understand that, such tools are not only to monitor employees and workers but also to understand how they behave, work, and respond to certain situations at work. For instance, if an employee opens google for help very often, this could mean that he has specific training requirement, which can easily be identified using such tool. That employee could be hesitant in expressing their lack of knowledge and this can be addressed by granting specific trainings and learning courses to that employee. This could result in significant improvement in productivity of that employee. We have used insightful for various such cases and to identify what helps and doesn't help many employees at work.
