# How to get away from a feature-based roadmap

I would love to start using a goal-oriented roadmap, but I find the lack of levels of hierarchy in ProductPlan makes that difficult. I generally use containers for my initiatives and bars for individual user stories. I know I can color-coordinate my containers and bars to correlate with a goal, but goals often only span a few months, whereas I like to use the same roadmap for an entire year. What do you recommend?

Hi Justin! One workaround could be to make roadmaps that span a quarter and continue to use each quarter's specific goals, and then roll them up into a portfolio view for the year. The other might be to make the swimlanes oriented around initiatives rather than teams or products.
