AI risk should be managed within the organization’s existing enterprise risk structure rather than isolated in a separate governance program.

Organizations should connect each AI use case to the business objective it supports, the data and third parties it depends on, the accountable owner, applicable policies, controls, monitoring requirements, evidence, and escalation criteria. Relevant exposures may include privacy, security, bias, inaccurate outputs, intellectual-property use, regulatory obligations, vendor dependency, and unauthorized adoption.

This approach allows AI risk to be evaluated alongside other enterprise risks and prevents fragmented oversight. The goal is not merely to maintain a list of approved AI tools. Leadership should be able to verify where AI is being used, which outcomes are at risk, whether required safeguards are working, and who is accountable when an exception occurs.
