# How has Lightdash worked for self-serve analytics with a small data team?

I love how easy Lightdash is for end users, plus the strong dbt integration that helps keep a single point of truth. Support has been outstanding, and the product keeps evolving, including the AI addition. The main challenge is that some key features can be missing at times, though the team seems quick to address gaps. If you are running a lean or one-person data team, how has Lightdash impacted dashboard building and speed to answers for your users?

For self serve, it has been huge that analytics novices can build their own visualisations and spot trends without needing my time for every question. On the data team side, the dev tools make it faster for me to ship data solutions out to the business, and support is quick to jump in when I get stuck. My main gripe is the generated SQL has way too many brackets, so it is harder to read than it should be.

One thing that has helped our small team is having a true single source of truth managed through the semantic layer, then exposing it in multiple channels depending on the audience. We use the Lightdash UI, but also push the same definitions into Sheets and some agentic use cases, which cuts down on rework. The team has also been very supportive, and they have even built features for us within days when we hit a gap.

As a data team of one, Lightdash has felt like an extension of a team I do not have, since I can lean on their expertise as the ecosystem shifts. What has helped most is how quickly they track industry changes and offer multiple paths depending on data maturity, from data apps for people who want to build on top of data to more standardized dashboard components. When new surfaces pop up, like Claude Dashboards, they moved fast to either integrate or frame how to work with new developments, which keeps our self serve setup from turning into an unruly game of whack-a-mole.

For my company, Lightdash has saved me hours day to day, mostly because the integrations and dbt support keep things moving without a lot of manual work. The AI focus has also been a nice boost when I need to get to an answer quickly.

### Comment 5

In our setup, the biggest win is that anything we define in dbt just shows up in Lightdash, so we avoid duplicated logic and can trust certified metrics. That semantic layer plus observability has made it easier to roll out self-serve BI with governance, even with a small team. One friction point is the UI for non-technical users, especially dashboard filters, which can feel unintuitive.

For us, the AI-driven analytics grounded in the semantic layer has been the differentiator. We’ve seen similar context layers done a bunch of ways, but this one feels the most robust and is why we picked Lightdash. It’s helped self-serve access to data so analysts can spend more time on deeper work.

### Comment 7

For our data platform team, the self-service setup plus tight data governance has really lowered reliance on data engineers while improving data quality and accessibility. We started with the AI NLQ as the main draw, but we now use it heavily to build highly visual, interactive Data Apps for users.
