In theory it should work much like a network firewall. Checking email to make sure it authenticates SPF, DKIM and DMARC records,  allows email from specific addresses and domain names, filters out spam and other malicious content, blocks email from specific addresses and domain names.

Reality is a another story. sophos developers didn't set this up like a firewall so trying to block domain names is a nightmare. Adding a domain name like companyname.com doesn't block host.companyname.com, you need to add two records the companyname.com and *.companyname.com - which is not a good design. 

They also can't block email addresses that are created specifically to send spam - username123@gmail.com can't be blocked when they change that number by adding a block for username*@gmail.com. again not a good design.

Getting this information from sophos is beyond difficult.

Support tickets take weeks/months to get resolved. They will call to ask what the ticket is about even if the ticket clearly explains the issue. Following week, they will email asking for access to your data. Following week they may email stating something but it is usually wrong and the ticket will need to be escalated to get to a support person that know something. Next week someone else might take the ticket and start the process all over again. by now the data is no longer in the system - data they need is gone after 14 days and all data is gone after 30 days. 

Wouldn't recommend this product or service to anyone.
