# How do you export and save Slack conversations?

I have not previously been able to save or export slack conversations, I did not know whether they saved automatically or if you manually had to save them and also to export them for future reference

Slack allows you to export your conversations. If you're on a free plan, you can export all public chats. If you're on a corporate plan, you can export everything.

The process is quite simple. It's detailed really nicely at https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/201658943-export-your-workspace-data?eu_nc=1 but to summarise, you click your workspace name top left, then Administration -> Workspace settings. Next, click the Import/Export button top right, then the Export tab. From here you can choose a data range and click the Start export button.

It's worth nothing that that resulting files will also have links to the files (stored on Slack's servers), but not the files themselves. Also, the logs will be in JSON format. This is a great, portable format that can be consumed easily by programs, but isn't necessarily great for human consumption!

I hope that helps!
