There are mainly 6 ways to add features to WordPress. Here is the short list on it.


1) Plugins: Install and activate via "Plugins" > "Add New."
2) Themes: Install and customize themes in "Appearance."

4) Widgets/Shortcodes: Add via "Widgets" or insert shortcodes.
5) Custom Post Types: Use plugins.

Wordpress features are mainly extended via plugins and themes.   Also as Wordpress is open-source and has an API, it can be extended through custom coding and integration with other applications.
