# How close are you getting to allowing a report to be shared without sharing the underlying sheet?

I have created many reports for people to view but do not want them to see the other data on the spreadsheet but when I share the sheet the user cannot see any information.  It would be very helpful in sharing information if you could find a way to keep the underlying sheet hidden.

In my Smartsheet world it is possible to share view access to the report but not the source sheet(s).  There is also a premium feature called Dynamic View that will give you even more flexibility with what sheet information you want to mask from certain users.  With Dynamic View, specific users can be made to see and even edit only the certain aspects of the sheet.

Once you create the desired report with the selected sheets and filtering, you then would share the report for viewing only. You filter it so that only the information  you want them to see is displayed. You do not have the share the sheet , if you do then of course they will see the data you with to hide.  Also I use a Dashboard shared with specific audiences to control wha t is viewed and what is not.

It is true that you can share the report as a Viewer but I believe that you also need to share the underlying data worksheet as well (as a viewer) or the report would pull up blank.  

I would suggest creating a new worksheet with cell links to your primary data sheet.  You can pull in just the data that you want to show.  Once that is done, you can create your report referencing the cell link worksheet vs. your full data set worksheet.

You can share a report with someone as long as you share the report with them as a Viewer. That way they can look at it but not have access to the associated sheet(s). If you share with them as either one of the Editor options or Admin, then they must have access to the associated sheet(s) since you are granting them access to manipulate the data.
