Just select "+" (Create button on top right), chose Task, Drag/Drop file you want to share to task popup that appeared in right bottom corner of the browser window, select recipient as assignee, and type some message to recipient in task title/description. This way you will have private item (Task) to communicate between you and the recipient. Recipient can close the task, when she do not want it to hang in her My Tasks section, can like it, or comment, if she has any questions. Additionally she can delete task, if she wish. You can find the item you sent via "Search -> Tasks I've Created".

Everyone on a project has access to any document uploaded to the project. You may want to create a separate project and only invite the person you would like to share this document with.

I have only used Asana for about 6 months and use it every day. From what I can see, if a user is following a task, has been added as a follower on a task, or was previously tagged on the conversation for a task, they will see what you post. I do have a project set up that has sub-tasks. One of those sub-tasks is specific to my manager because the rest of the Team does not need to see those updates. They are not a follower on those tasks but for the project. It seems to work for us this way, but if any user wanted to see that task just for my manager and is a follower of a project, they can easily open it and poke around. I am not familar with using Asana in a way to keep conversations or sends of documents "private" or only visible to one person/user.
