# Does HAProxy handle SSL termination, or does that stay on the backend?

We're deciding where TLS should be managed in our architecture. Can HAProxy terminate and manage
SSL centrally, and what does that mean for certificate updates, performance, and traffic to backend services?

HAProxy handles it. It terminates and offloads SSL/TLS at the load balancer, handling over 2 million HTTPS requests per second on a single AWS Graviton2 instance, so you move that processing off your backend servers and consolidate it at the proxy layer. You also get OCSP stapling, 0-RTT resumption, mTLS, Let's Encrypt integration, and centralized certificate management across the fleet through HAProxy Fusion.
