# Does HAProxy do both Layer 4 and Layer 7, or just one of them?

Our environment includes both TCP-based services and HTTP applications. Can HAProxy manage traffic
at both layers, and when would you choose one approach over the other?

Both. From the same instance, HAProxy load balances TCP at Layer 4 and HTTP at Layer 7, including HTTP/3 over QUIC, so you can distribute raw transport-layer traffic or apply detailed application-layer routing based on headers, paths, and other request attributes. UDP load balancing is also a Layer 4 capability, available through HAProxy Enterprise and HAProxy ALOHA virtual or hardware load balancer. Most teams run a mix of Layer 4 and Layer 7, and you get both layers in one engine rather than a separate product for each.
