# AutoCAD MEP vs HEC-RAS for a team managing both MEP coordination and hydraulic analysis on infrastructure projects: which MEP platform handles the overlap without requiring a complete tool switch?

<p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">	For the infrastructure teams here: AutoCAD MEP vs HEC-RAS for managing both MEP coordination and hydraulic analysis, which one handles the overlap without a full tool switch?</p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">The honest answer is that there is not really an overlap to handle, because these two do different jobs. On G2's<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/categories/mep"> </a><a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/categories/mep">MEP</a> category they sit side by side, but:</p><ul>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/autocad-mep/reviews"><strong>AutoCAD MEP</strong></a> is for designing and coordinating building systems, the ducts, pipes, and conduit inside a structure.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/hec-ras/reviews"><strong>HEC-RAS</strong></a> is river and floodplain hydraulics from the US Army Corps, built for open-channel flow, flood mapping, and dam or levee studies, not building plumbing.</li>
</ul><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">So a team doing both is not choosing between them, it is running both, one for the building side and one for the water side. The switch isn’t a failure to avoid, it’s just two disciplines. The real question is whether they exchange data cleanly, so your site and hydraulic work lines up with the model instead of living in a separate silo.</p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">For anyone running both on infrastructure work: how do you keep that handoff clean, and is a civil platform like Civil 3D doing the connecting in the middle?</p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true"></p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true"></p>

&lt;p&gt;You&#39;ve called it correctly, the category listing makes them look like rivals when they&#39;re just neighbors. Teams running both usually do put Civil 3D in the middle: it speaks DWG to the building side and handles the surfaces and alignments HEC-RAS results get mapped against. The handoff stays clean when one platform owns the terrain and drainage data and everything else references it read-only. It breaks when results get passed around as PDFs and someone redraws them.&lt;/p&gt;
