# Are EDI contracts usually long-term? What happens to my data if I cancel?

Unfortunately, yes. Long-term contracts are still common in the EDI industry. Many established providers lock you into annual or multi-year agreements, and switching becomes difficult because your trading partner mappings, connection configurations, and compliance certifications live inside their platform. This is exactly the model we rejected when we built Elevate. No long-term contracts. Everything is month-to-month. We believe if we're delivering good service, you'll stay because you want to, not because a contract forces you to.
As for your data: your trading partner relationships belong to you, not your EDI provider. If you ever leave Elevate, your retailers don't disappear. A new provider would re-establish those connections. The setup work (mapping, testing, certification) does need to be redone with a new provider, which is why switching has a cost regardless of contracts. But you're never held hostage.

Before signing with any EDI provider, ask: What's the contract term? What's the cancellation process? Are there early termination fees? What happens to my maps and configurations if I leave? If the answers are vague, that's a red flag.
