# What is a metric?

A metric is the unique string representing a piece of data you send to us. If you send a "foo.bar" datapoint a million times in a month, that is considered one metric. If you sent us "foo.bar.1", "foo.bar.2", etc. each of those unique metric names would count as one metric.
