A service worker can be considered as a Javascript that runs in the background in a browser and can determine the user's network and intercept the requests going out from the browser.

By installing a service worker, and loading the network-optimization plugin provided by ImageKit, the image requests get intercepted and their URL is modified to the right quality level depending on the user's network.

You can read more about installing a generic service worker here - https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/codelabs/offline and about adding ImageKit's network-based optimization plugin here - https://docs.imagekit.io/features/network-based-image-optimization
