# How do I avoid the application crashing on me?

Even I am zooming with my friends, I often freeze and then the application crashes. It appears to be personal to myself as other members of my household do not have this issue. I have tried clearing memory on my computer but am not sure other measures I can take.

Gosh Emily, I have never had this happen to me up to this point. I would leave the "meeting" and then relaunch. See if that works. Let me know if it does, okay?

I got kicked off four times the other day but I was trying to attend via my car as my husband was driving. I don’t get kicked off from the house unless the WiFi turns off. We have ATT internet.

The only reason it will crash, as I think, is if your wifi is unstable.

Hi i do several Zoom meeting a day. When it crashes. It is usually one of two things. The WIFI is unstable or for some reason I may have been online to long and all crap that sneaks in under wire. Between each meeting I shutdown my computer completely and restarts it. Whenever I do that I never have any problem. When I don't almost 100 percent of the time something goes wrong. I run several meeting a day at 30 minute intervals and this works for me.

OK, convoluted answer but I think relevant. We do a lot of Zoom meetings for my work.
If your bandwidth is OK, Wi-Fi or wired, and you have a good computer, then check your other applications. I am running a very fast computer, Lots of RAM and very fast hard disk. When Zoom crashes or breaks up on me, it is because I am running through our VPN which encrypts and decrypts everything! That includes VIDEO which is very time consuming. If my computer is doing all that as well as running Zoom, Slack, Oracle, Sql Server Management Studio, or other, then it is just too much at once. I try to limit my running programs.

you mentioned that others in your house don't have this problem, so it is unlikely to be the Wi-Fi bandwidth unless you are all using Wi-Fi at the same time.

Instead, it could be the processing speed of your device is lower than that of others in your household. Zoom appears to be dependent on the processor in your device. My husband and my computer's are one year apart, but I have green screen features he doesn't, and less trouble zooming.

Consider the processor...

I have seen this a few times with one of my colleagues. This maybe a case of not enough upload speed from your broadband. You can run a speed test using one of many apps( or speedtest.net) if your upload speed is under 2Mbps you may experience freezing and loss of connection. Try rebooting your modem and router (if seperate devices) try avoid uploading on your network during your sessions.
The chance that this is caused by your device is slim. Most hardware should be able to handle a zoom session. However trying to use the virtual background seems to require more processor speed and graphics than many rival applications. Hope this helps

We have found that crashing, freezing, and delays can be a result of low bandwidth with your wifi signal. When we have had that issue, there were multiple users on different Zoom conferences and our router could not handle the data stream for the devices. Once we upgraded our router - that issue went away. Good luck.

Check your Wi-Fi, probably poor signal or too many users in the home

Hi Emily,

You are confronting a "new" problem in that more and more people are using the internet super hi-way in your home/street/ area. Typically we Zoom at times when many other people are browsing the internet.

When the hi-way if filling-up the signal degrades and becomes unstable. You may have to reduce the number of users in your home when you are Zooming, or change your schedule to avoid higher traffic times.

most broadband providers have sufficient download speeds it tends to be the upload speed that causes this issue. Our local Xfinity servixe provides 1-2Mbps upload compared to my provider that supplies 50Mbps down and 15Mbps upload My family and neighborhood can stream all they want the upload speed is not affected and I have yet to have an issue with Zoom anytime of the day and I am on all times of the day during an average week.

I've never had the app crash on me, but I check my internet connection and update whenever prompted. I also called my internet provider to make sure I was getting my maximum bandwidth assigned to my residence. There's a range and sometimes you're getting the lowest end of connectivity, a likely time of the crash.

Maximise your RAM and/or use an ssd. Besides ensure your net has reasonable speed.
If it crashes like once in two weeks or something do not even bother!
One more thing ensure you have stable wifi signal . I had this issue and I changed my internet provider. That helped. Hope this helps.

There are a couple of possibilities, Emily - but the basic reason Zoom does that is that it doesn't have the resources to keep going. I've had it restart on me a couple of times and wasn't sure of the reason - but then someone in a meeting talked about it being much better once they kicked the kids off Netflix. Makes sense - if you're zooming and streaming through the same router, eventually you'll run out of capacity.
First, as suggested, make sure you have all pending updates installed for both Windows and Zoom. If you've had to install any that need a restart, check again after restarting. Then try a Zoom meeting without anyone else connected to your router and see if that helps. Also restart the router, leaving it switched off for a couple of minutes, to see if that changes anything. Finally, recording can degrade your session from your viewpoint, even though the recording itself is fine; if you are recording, ask someone else on the call to do that for a while and see if there is a difference.
Footnote: Version 5 of Zoom seems to be much better, and there will be a forced update to that after May 30. If you can, I would upgrade sooner. It will be contention of some kind - just a matter of going through the possibilities.

I have not had any crashing of the system, however, my first instinct is that when these things happen, it can be an underlying issue with another software that is running in the background, or you have an update on the system pending install. I would always be sure you have a fresh reboot before the Zoom meeting to at least eliminate either of those two issues. If your network is weak or your wi-fi signal is weak, you might look into that because you can lose that signal also. A fresh re-start of the router might help.
