# If a teacher sets up the link can he teacher mute the students  microphone and then turn the microphone on ?

We want to be able to mute the students microphones and then turn it on when we want a student to respond?   Our 3rd graders are not adept at muting their microphones so we have too many responding  at one time.

This is Shaun from G2. I manage our education categories. You have my deep respect for running Zoom calls with a group of third-graders! (And I can tell you from personal experience, full-grown adults also struggle mightily with properly muting themselves on Zoom, so you are hardly alone in dealing with this problem.) 

Luckily, Zoom has features that allow meeting hosts to mute participants’ audio. When you are hosting a meeting, click on the “Manage Participants” button on the control bar to show the list of participants. Within that menu, you should see a button at the bottom that says “mute all.” When you click it, it should give you the option to allow participants to unmute themselves, so you can decide if that option makes sense for your students. If you decide not to let students unmute themselves, you could consider teaching students how to use the “raise hand” function. If a meeting participant clicks on that same participants menu, there should be a button at the bottom that says “raise hand.” When a student clicks this, a little hand icon will appear by their name in the participants list.  That way, you will be able to see which students want to speak and unmute them yourself as you call on them. You can absolutely do that!  You just click on the setting "mute participants upon entry"- and Uncheck the box that says "participants can unmute themselves."  Then, you just have to remember to unmute everyone when you want them to speak.

You can also set it so participants are automatically muted when joining through the "Advanced Options" in Schedule - it's the third tick-box down. And I think you can make that the default for all your scheduled meetings, but you probably have to log into your account through the Web interface and set the option in there.
