Hello Jeoffrey!
You can already add image assets to a reference entity.  
(1) Create a new reference entity by clicking on the references entity icon, then clicking the “create” button in the upper right-hand corner. 
(2) From there, click “attributes” and “add an attribute” of type “image” to the reference entity. Alternatively, you can select the “properties” area inside of your reference entity, and “add an image” to be your hero image for the reference entity.
