My company doesn't pay for Marketo. Whats the best way to learn how it works and gain experience using it to drive marketing automation programs?

Aside from the training materials online from Marketo and partners, your best way to learn is through users. Marketo User Groups meet regularly in many large cities and are open to the public. Experienced users would be happy to answer your questions and give you a demo of the tool. Marketo is also hosting some roadshow events this year in DC, Boston and Chicago. And of course you can learn a ton at the Adobe
Marketo Summit annually. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, I’ve found it very difficult to understand how marketo works without having access to the tools.

Use my has some courses on marketo basics. There is a free course called “marketo foundation training series” on udemy which may be a good place to start.

Docs.marketo.com is also a great resource to get a feel for the product.

Finally, many of the top digitalpi partners have great and helpful blogs (digitalpi.com; beachhead.io; briansolis.com; leadmd.com for example)

Hope this helps! But ultimately getting access to the tool really it required to get it.

It’s mostly understanding Boolean logic, data management best practices to get started.

Marketo has made quite a bit of content available on their website - https://www.marketo.com/education/training/fundamentals/#marketing-automation/learn

But without an instance - and Marketo does not have a free trial period - it will be difficult to gain experience in Marketo. Mautic is a free open-source option for this perhaps.
