Im Bereich der Back-Office-Administration bezieht sich Robotic Process Automation auf Automatisierung, bei der ein Computer bestehende Unternehmensanwendungssoftware auf die gleiche Weise steuert wie ein Benutzer. Das bedeutet, dass im Gegensatz zu herkömmlicher Anwendungssoftware Robotic Process Automation ein Werkzeug oder eine Plattform ist, die andere Anwendungssoftware über die Benutzeroberfläche der bestehenden Anwendung betreibt und orchestriert und in diesem Sinne nicht „integriert“ ist.
