# Best Network Automation Tools

  *By [Tian Lin](https://research.g2.com/insights/author/tian-lin)*

Network automation tools automate the process of managing, configuring, testing, deploying, and operating physical and virtual devices within a network. They increase productivity by preventing human errors and reducing operating expenses associated with manual network management. IT teams use network automation tools for secure and cost-efficient execution of complex tasks, including network configuration management, network resource provisioning or capacity planning, network device mapping, drift detection, network audits, and OS upgrades.

While network automation tools address various issues, they must not be mistaken for either software-defined networking (SDN) or software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN). SDN optimizes network resources, which helps in making a network more flexible and easier to manage. When this approach is applied to wide-area networks, the technology is known as [SD-WAN](https://www.g2.com/categories/sd-wan).

To qualify for inclusion in the Network Automation Tools category, a product must:

- Automate device configuration maintenance and provide regular backups that are encrypted and safely stored
- Improve compliance by automating the process of determining if a network device meets the organization’s compliance and regulation standards
- Facilitate performance monitoring by allowing IT to read and analyze network performance data on vendor hardware to provide configuration recommendations
- Optimize the performance of security infrastructure
- Reduce human error

### 25. [Altostrat SDX](https://www.g2.com/products/altostrat-sdx/reviews)
Altostrat SDX is a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Automation platform that helps network administrators and service providers to centrally manage, automate, and secure distributed MikroTik router infrastructure. The cloud-native solution is designed for organizations, including Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs), that face operational challenges in maintaining security, compliance, and performance across a fleet of geographically dispersed MikroTik devices. It addresses use cases ranging from ensuring network uptime and security policy enforcement to streamlining multi-tenant client management and reducing manual configuration overhead. The platform functions by establishing a secure control plane between each MikroTik router and the Altostrat cloud, enabling centralized orchestration. A key component of its architecture is the use of agentic AI models to build and execute complex automation workflows. This allows the system to move beyond simple scripting to perform event-driven, intelligent actions, such as proactive threat mitigation, automated compliance audits, and dynamic configuration adjustments based on network conditions. By abstracting device-level complexity, Altostrat SDX enables administrators to manage their network based on high-level operational intent rather than manual, per-device commands. SD-WAN and Traffic Steering: The platform provides robust SD-WAN capabilities, including automated WAN failover and intelligent traffic steering. It combines multiple internet connections (e.g., fiber, LTE) into a single, high-availability link. By continuously monitoring the health and performance of each WAN path, the system automatically reroutes traffic to a secondary link within seconds of an outage or performance degradation, ensuring continuous network uptime for critical applications. AI-Driven Automation Workflows: Altostrat SDX incorporates an AI-powered orchestration engine that allows users to create event-triggered automation workflows. These workflows can be used for a variety of operational tasks, such as automatically applying a baseline security configuration to newly onboarded devices, running scheduled compliance checks against a defined standard, or triggering a threat mitigation script in response to a security alert. Centralized Security and Policy Enforcement: The solution provides a unified framework for deploying and managing security policies across all connected devices. This includes DNS-based content filtering to block malicious or inappropriate websites, integration with BGP threat intelligence feeds to proactively block known malicious IP addresses, and centralized control over router firewall rules to ensure a consistent security posture across the entire network. Multi-Tenant Management and Visibility: Designed for service providers, the platform features team-based access control to securely segregate management of different client networks. All actions performed by the system or users are recorded in a detailed orchestration log, providing a complete audit trail for compliance and troubleshooting. The system also generates SLA reports to quantify branch uptime and network performance. In essence, Altostrat SDX transforms a collection of individual MikroTik routers into a cohesive, software-defined network fabric. It is intended for organizations seeking to improve operational efficiency, enhance their security posture, and leverage intelligent automation to manage their network infrastructure at scale.
