# Best Virtual Reality (VR) Collaboration Platforms

 *By [Adam Crivello](https://research.g2.com/insights/author/adam-crivello)*

VR collaboration (VR) platforms allow users to collaborate in virtual reality from remote locations. These solutions enable users to meet up in the same virtual space and communicate through both speech and text. VR collaboration platforms offer users the ability to choose and edit avatars to represent their likeness as well as custom environments to host a virtual meetup. Within virtual meetups users can host virtual presentations, edit and visualize designs, and collaborate and socialize on any team projects.

This type of software can be deployed simultaneously to multiple users, which can enhance remote employees’ ability to work with their colleagues. VR collaboration platforms should allow users to develop their virtual spaces to fit their specific needs, typically done so with a [virtual reality SDK software](https://www.g2.com/categories/vr-sdk). These solutions may also facilitate the recording and playback of virtual meetings.

To qualify for inclusion in the Virtual Reality (VR) Collaboration Platforms category, a product must:

- Allow for users to select an avatar to represent their likeness
- Enable users to select and edit environments to host meetups
- Provide the ability to communicate with other participants through speech and text
- Allow users to participate in a given activity together

### What You Should Know About VR Collaboration Software

### What is VR Collaboration Software?

Virtual reality (VR) collaboration software allows users to collaborate in VR remotely. Because these solutions rely on fully immersive hardware, participants need a VR headset to interface with the software. These solutions enable users to meet in the same virtual space and communicate through speech and text.

VR collaboration platforms allow users to choose and edit avatars to represent their likeness and custom environments to host a virtual meetup. The connected virtual spaces used to interact in VR are colloquially referred to as the metaverse, though it remains to be seen whether that term will have long-term staying power.

This type of software can be deployed simultaneously to multiple users, enhancing remote teams’ ability to work together. The more users a solution allows to collaborate at once, the more applicable the solution will be for large functions like VR all-hands meetings or presentations. On a smaller scale, VR collaboration platforms can facilitate team tasks by allowing users to build presentations together, host brainstorming sessions, edit and visualize designs, craft documents, and collaborate and socialize on team projects.

Beyond productive collaboration, VR allows users to socialize at work events in a more personal way than video conferencing when in-person meetups aren’t realistic. Team members who can’t attend VR meetings or presentations have the option of experiencing the recorded version in VR later. Some VR collaboration tools allow users to develop virtual spaces to fit their specific needs, typically done so with a [VR SDK software](https://www.g2.com/categories/vr-sdk).

**What Does VR Stand For?**

VR stands for virtual reality. Virtual reality refers to a fully immersive virtual environment achieved via a headset or goggles.

### What are the Common Features of VR Collaboration Software?

The following are some core features of VR collaboration software that can help remote teams work together:

**Multiple simultaneous users:** Ideally, VR collaboration software allows unlimited users to collaborate from any location. This helps companies host team and company-wide meetings, create customer-facing interactive events, and more, regardless of scale and fully remote.

**Communication:** VR collaboration software allows users to communicate remotely via speech or text. This is essential for users to collaborate in VR and provides a real-time virtual environment to host brainstorming sessions, training sessions, and more. Some solutions also allow users to add notes and annotations to 3D objects and whiteboards, which aids product development, field service maintenance, and more.

**Avatar creation:** To represent users in virtual space, VR collaboration platforms allow users to create custom avatars. These can be curated to closely match the user’s real-world appearance, or purposefully stray from recognizable likenesses when anonymity is needed.

**3D environment creation:** Event administrators using VR collaboration software can customize the 3D environments they use in the virtual world. Whether users need a smaller collaboration space or a larger venue for public events, they’ll be able to curate the virtual environment to their needs. Most solutions offer preset 3D environments for easy startup but these platforms also allow users to create their own unique spaces, which can then be connected to the larger metaverse for public company events or kept private for hosting VR meetings.

**Social features:** Beyond work productivity, VR collaboration tools often include social features such as games for remote work meetups. This helps teams stay connected and socialize via virtual collaboration even when working in disparate locations.

**Development:** Some VR collaboration solutions include development tools to expand and customize the platform to the team’s needs. Developers can use these functions to curate collaborative VR experiences that best suit their company’s goals.

### What are the Benefits of VR Collaboration Software?

VR collaboration software comes with its own set of benefits, as mentioned below:

**Remote collaboration:** VR collaboration software offers a unique means of real-time remote collaboration. Collaborating remotely with these tools provides an immersive experience in a VR environment that mimics an in-person workspace. This is beneficial from both a productivity and social standpoint as teams look for ways to stay connected and work together in a remote work environment.

**Cost savings:** Upon implementing a VR collaboration solution, companies can save costs related to physical event planning, employee travel coverage, and more by simply emulating an in-person event via VR. Because all of the infrastructure involved is digital, the usual costs involved with setting up an event become irrelevant or negligible.

### Who Uses VR Collaboration Software?

The great thing about VR collaboration software is that it is useful to everyone in a remote work environment. From brainstorming sessions to training sessions to customer-facing events, a wide variety of use cases are available to those utilizing VR collaboration tools.

A VR-enabled device and a reliable internet connection are required for stakeholders to take advantage of these tools, but once that hurdle is crossed everyone can get involved in collaborating in real time.

#### Software Related to VR Collaboration Software

Related solutions that can be used together with VR collaboration software include:

[VR training simulator software:](https://www.g2.com/categories/vr-training-simulator) VR training simulators can be used in almost any industry to help train users in real time in an immersive virtual environment. Students and professionals can utilize virtual situations to improve the overall learning experience by reproducing real-life situations, making the experience more engaging and retainable.

[VR content management systems:](https://www.g2.com/categories/vr-content-management-systems) A VR content management system (CMS) is used by organizations to collect, store, and analyze all VR content (such as 3D models) in a centralized location. As VR evolves, these tools will become increasingly important for businesses looking to manage and organize all virtual content created for company purposes. Users may upload 360-degree videos and images directly onto these platforms and edit them within the solution, often using drag-and-drop functionality.

[AR collaboration tools:](https://www.g2.com/categories/ar-collaboration-tools) AR collaboration tools are used to train, collaborate, and provide technical support from a remote environment using augmented reality (AR) applications. AR collaboration tools are often used to provide remote support in fields such as maintenance, manufacturing, automotive, and utilities. In these fields, users can connect hardware such as phones, tablets, or AR glasses to software that provides them with visual instructions showing them how to conduct maintenance on any given piece of equipment.

### Challenges with VR Collaboration Software

Software solutions can come with their own set of challenges.

**Network availability:** Many potential VR collaboration users in fields such as utilities and maintenance often find themselves in situations where a high bandwidth internet connection is hard to come by. These tools rely on a reliable internet connection, which can sometimes be a lot to ask for.

**Hardware requirements:** These solutions require users to have a compatible VR headset or goggles to function properly. The cost and logistics involved with getting employees set up with VR equipment, especially in a remote work environment, can be challenging.

**Need for space:** VR often requires the user to have a lot of real-world space at their disposal while using the headset. Expecting each user to have a comfortable space to use VR may be asking too much.

### How to Buy VR Collaboration Software

#### Requirements Gathering (RFI/RFP) for VR Collaboration Software

G2.com can assist buyers in finding a VR collaboration tool, whether a buyer is searching for the first time or looking to replace legacy software.

Generally, the most important considerations are price, VR customization options, number of simultaneous users supported, and device support. One of the primary purposes of VR collaboration is to enable remote, fully immersive collaboration that is dynamic and effective for all participants. With that in mind, ensuring that the tool of choice allows users to easily create excellent visuals and environments is essential. Using G2 reviews as a reference, buyers can determine the solution that will be most effective for their teams, ensuring a pain-free learning curve and comprehensive solution.

After narrowing down a potential pool of products, teams can then apply further considerations for budget, requirements, and more. Using this approach, buyers can move forward in the buying process with confidence, referencing their checklist in conjunction with G2 scores to find the right solution for their needs.

#### Compare VR Collaboration Software Products

**Create a long list**

Buyers should consider the many VR collaboration tools on the market, especially as the market grows. Some of these tools are tailored specifically for specific fields, while others offer a more general use case. Beyond that, some solutions shine as productive collaboration tools and others are better at handling social meetups in VR. Buyers should consider distinctions like these to produce a long list of potentially viable products.

**Create a short list**

Once a long list is created, buyers should employ a more granular approach to trim it down. Along with a matrix of must-have functionality and pricing, buyers can use G2 reviews to explore any potential advantages and disadvantages among the products they’re considering. Is one solution better at handling virtual presentations than more active virtual events? With factors like these in mind, buyers should narrow down their search to a list of three to five products.

**Conduct demos**

All software products on a company’s short list must be investigated firsthand via demos to ensure that real-time functionality matches on-paper expectations. During demos, buyers should make inquiries based on the requirements gathering they’ve done prior. For example, one might ask for a VR tour of some virtual spaces and event setups.

**Selection of VR Collaboration Software**

**Choose a selection team**

Companies of any size should try to involve the most relevant stakeholders when beginning the VR collaboration tools selection process. Large companies might have the resources to include individual team members to fill roles such as team managers and event planners. Smaller companies can overlap roles to compensate for their relatively fewer employees.

**Negotiation**

Some vendors offer VR collaboration tools that can do far more than what the buyer requires, such as an added development kit to build custom VR functionality. While some software vendors may only offer an all-or-nothing package, buyers who want to optimize spending should try to negotiate a fairly priced package, including only the functionalities that matter to them. For example, a product’s pricing page could show that the buyer’s must-have features are only included with an expensive all-in-one package, whereas a sales conversation may prove otherwise.

**Final decision**

To conclude the process, performing a trial run with a small pool of employees whose workflow depends on collaboration is essential. This will aid buyers in ensuring that their chosen VR collaboration tool is easy to use and enables enhanced collaboration. If the tool is received well and utilized often, the buyer’s selection is probably the right one. If not, it may be time to try another product from the short list.
