Question for the designers here who have ever watched a pipe route itself somewhere it should not go. I am trying to find out which MEP software avoids automation that creates unexpected snapping or unwanted modifications during design work, because the[](https://www.g2.com/categories/mep)[MEP](https://www.g2.com/categories/mep) category is full of tools that want to help before being asked.

One framing first, tell me if it matches your experience: the problem is not automation itself. It is automation that touches your geometry uninvited. Calculation automation saves hours. Auto-routing that grabs your elbow mid-drag costs them back.

- [**AutoCAD MEP**](https://www.g2.com/products/autocad-mep/reviews) is best known for keeping the drafting manual first. Snaps and system connections exist, but they behave like classic AutoCAD, so you can toggle them and they mostly stay where you put them. Does that hold in dense models too?
- [**Revit MEP**](https://www.g2.com/products/revit-mep/reviews) is the one people usually complain about here, and also the one reviewers rate highest overall. Auto-connect and routing assumptions are baked into how it thinks. For daily users: which settings actually tame it?
- [**Design Master Electrical**](https://www.g2.com/products/design-master-electrical/reviews) takes the split-the-difference route. What is the automation moment that actually ruined an afternoon for you, and in which tool?

The stories I've collected from drafters all share one shape: the automation that hurts isn't the one that grabs your elbow mid-drag, it's the one that edits something offscreen and you find it three sheets later. Revit's auto-connect rerouting a branch you weren't looking at is the classic. Which is an argument for your Design Master framing: automate the calculations, which are checkable, and leave the geometry alone.

For the architects, BIM leads, and reviewers here: which MEP platforms are highest rated for architectural professionals coordinating complex building systems across disciplines? The expensive failures in a complex building don't happen inside one discipline, they happen at the seams between them, where a duct wants the same space as a beam. On G2's[](https://www.g2.com/categories/mep)[MEP](https://www.g2.com/categories/mep) category, coordination is less about any one tool and more about everyone working in the same model and catching clashes while they are still cheap to fix. Three known for exactly that:

- [**Revit MEP**](https://www.g2.com/products/revit-mep/reviews): the shared BIM model the whole team already lives in, and the natural hub for pulling M, E, and P together.
- [**MagiCAD**](https://www.g2.com/products/magicad/reviews): real-time clash detection as you model in Revit, catching MEP conflicts with architectural and structural elements early.
- [**Trimble SysQue**](https://www.g2.com/products/trimble-sysque/reviews): keeps fabrication-level detail coordinated in the same Revit model, so design and what gets built don't drift.

One tool missing here is Autodesk Navisworks, where many teams actually run clash coordination. Would you put it ahead of any of these, and what else are we missing?

I'd put Navisworks alongside these rather than ahead. It's a referee, not a place to fix anything, so teams that run clash detection there still walk the fixes back into Revit. The bigger omission might be the cloud worksharing layer, since shared models across firms changed what "everyone in the same model" even means, arguably more than any authoring tool did.

Hi MEP folks on G2, this one needs people who review or work in these tools. The question I keep hearing: is[](https://www.g2.com/products/autocad-mep/reviews)[**AutoCAD MEP**](https://www.g2.com/products/autocad-mep/reviews) still worth it for an experienced engineering team after the recent interface updates, or does[](https://www.g2.com/products/autodesk-fabrication-estmep/reviews)[**AutoDesk Fabrication ESTmep**](https://www.g2.com/products/autodesk-fabrication-estmep/reviews) cover the same MEP software workflows with less disruption?

Here is the honest part, and I want the room to check me on it. Looking at the[](https://www.g2.com/categories/mep)[MEP](https://www.g2.com/categories/mep) category, these two are siblings, not rivals. Both are Autodesk, both speak MEP data, and they connect to each other. But they do different jobs:

- **AutoCAD MEP** is the design and drafting side. Your team lays out ductwork, piping, and electrical in a familiar AutoCAD environment. Interface updates sting precisely because muscle memory is the product.
- **ESTmep** sits on the contractor side. It is an estimating tool that prices the work using manufacturer content and cost databases, then feeds bids. It does not replace a design seat.

So the simplest way to decide: if your team designs, ESTmep cannot take AutoCAD MEP's chair, and the real question is whether the interface changes cost more than retraining. If your team estimates and fabricates, ESTmep was always the right chair.

Have I got that split right? And for those who pushed through the interface updates, was the disruption a month or a year?

You've got the split right, they're different chairs. On the disruption question, what I've consistently heard from teams: it's a month for individuals and closer to a year for the office, because the slow part isn't muscle memory, it's the templates, plot configurations, and standards that were tuned around the old behavior. Budget for the second thing, the first fixes itself.
