Hey MEP reviewers and BIM coordinators, this needs your scars. I want to know which MEP software platforms actually enable real-time coordination between electrical and mechanical disciplines in the same model, because in the[](https://www.g2.com/categories/mep)[MEP](https://www.g2.com/categories/mep) category, "coordination" gets claimed a lot and delivered less.

The tension is old: electrical and mechanical fight for the same ceiling space, and most coordination still happens at weekly clash meetings after the damage is done. Same-model, real-time work is the fix everyone wants. Three names come up:

- [**Revit MEP**](https://www.g2.com/products/revit-mep/reviews) is the honest default answer. One shared model, all disciplines in it, clashes visible as they happen rather than at review. Reviewers rate it the strongest tool in this category, and this is exactly why. The cost: everyone has to actually work in Revit, and that retraining is real.
- [**MagiCAD**](https://www.g2.com/products/magicad/reviews) layers discipline tools for ventilation, piping, and electrical on top of Revit, AutoCAD, and BricsCAD, with calculations built in. On paper, ideal for mixed-platform teams. Worth saying plainly: reviewers here are much cooler on it than the pitch suggests, and I would like to hear why from actual users.
- [**AutoCAD MEP**](https://www.g2.com/products/autocad-mep/reviews) coordinates the older way, through xrefs and overlays. Solid, familiar, but not really real-time or same-model. I include it because plenty of teams still make it work.

So the real question: has same-model coordination actually killed

Answering the question where it cut off: no, same-model coordination hasn't killed the weekly clash meeting, but it changed what the meeting is for. The clashes get found Tuesday morning in the model instead of Friday in review, so the meeting stops being discovery and becomes arbitration, deciding who moves when both trades want the same foot of ceiling. That's the honest win. Software finds the conflict, it still can't rule on who owns the space.

The costly habit in MEP estimating is re-counting the same job by hand at every stage, design, then detailing, then fabrication, and watching the numbers drift apart each time. For anyone estimating across stages, which actually killed the double takeoff, and where did quantities still drift between design and fabrication?

The double takeoff dies only when detailing happens in the same environment the estimate reads from, which is the real case for ESTmep and SysQue. Where quantities still drift is the design-to-fabrication seam, and it's structural: a design model carries allowances while a fabrication model carries parts, so the counts differ even when nobody made a mistake. Model schedules in Revit fix the re-tally problem within design stages, but that seam needs the constructible model to close it.

On big jobs, the tool that feels effortless on a small model is often the first to crawl once the file gets huge, so ease of setup and large-file performance tend to pull against each other. Pulling from G2's[](https://www.g2.com/categories/mep)[MEP](https://www.g2.com/categories/mep) category, three worth weighing:

- [**Revit MEP**](https://www.g2.com/products/revit-mep/reviews): the standard for large coordinated models, though it really only stays workable at scale through worksets and linked models. A heavy multi-discipline file can still get sluggish without that discipline.

For teams on genuinely large projects, which held its speed, and what habits (worksets, splitting by level) made the difference?

From teams on genuinely large jobs, the consistent answer is that Revit holds its speed exactly as long as the model hygiene does. Worksets by discipline, links split by level, and a regular purge-and-audit cadence matter more than the hardware. When someone skips that discipline, the file crawls and the tool gets blamed. AutoCAD MEP feeling fast is partly survivorship: the jobs that stay on it are the ones that never grow the heavy coordinated model in the first place.
